Arauco Educational Foundation’s second seminar in Chile: The value of evaluation

The second of a series of seminars organized by Arauco Educational Foundation was held on October 9 at Fimaule center for events, located in the city of Talca, Chile.

The meeting’s purpose was to discuss experiences and ideas regarding the importance of evaluation in the educational process. Jorge Manzi, Ximena Azúa and Blanca Cuadrado were the seminar’s distinguished panelists.

Inaugurating the conference was ARAUCO’s president of the Board, José Tomás Guzmán, who said, “Since its establishment, the Educational Foundation has had the purpose of contributing to the improvement of public education, strengthening and complementing teachers’ work in the classroom and aiding school boards and authorities in the challenge of educational management in each community school”.

Angélica Prats, the Foundation’s manager, pointed out: “During these two decades that we proudly celebrate this year, we’ve had the privilege of contributing to 31 communities in the Maule, Bío Bío and Los Ríos regions, benefiting 509 schools or educational centers, and more than 4,300 teachers educating over 78,200 children each year”.

As the seminar ended, the 2009 Arauco Educational Foundation Awards were given: “Teacher award: a tribute to Mabel COndemarín” and “Community award: to the commitment with student reading achievements”. Both awards were created in 2008 in order to promote and acknowledge the efforts made to improve municipal education in Chile.

The first award distinguishes a teacher recognized by the educational community as an outstanding educator. This year it was granted to Marisa Valentino, a teacher at public school Liceo C5 Augusto Santelices in the Licantén community. The community award was given to the community of Portezuelo, in Chile’s VIII Region, for the improvement of readership levels among their students.
